Beds and Guest Count: Setting Up Where Guests Will Sleep

The rooms and beds screen asks which beds are in which room, and how many guests your home fits. For counting bedrooms and bathrooms, see Bedrooms, bathrooms, and square feet.

For a three-month stay, the difference between two queens and a twin plus a futon is the difference between a home someone can live in and one they cannot. It is worth getting right.

Rooms and beds

Each bedroom gets its own section where you set how many of each bed type it has. A studio has a single sleeping area instead.

There is also an optional common area, for a sofa bed in the living room or a futon in a den. Leave it empty if nobody sleeps there.

How beds count

Each bed counts toward how many people your home sleeps. Beds made for two, like a queen or a sofa bed, count as two. A twin counts as one. A crib counts as none: it is listed so parents can see it, but an infant does not take a guest spot.

Two rules before you can publish

  • Every bedroom needs at least one bed, including a studio's sleeping area.
  • At least one bed has to sleep someone. A crib on its own is not enough.

Your guest count

The first time you fill in this screen, the guest count is suggested from what your beds sleep. It is yours to change, and if you change your beds later, update it yourself.

Lowering it is often the right call. If your home has a queen and a sofa bed but you would rather host two people than four, set it to 2. You can set it higher than your beds sleep, but guests will compare the two and ask.

Be straight about the sofa bed

A sofa bed is fine for a visiting friend. For an adult every night for three months, it is a complaint waiting to happen. List it, and make sure your guest count and description reflect where people will really sleep.

Common questions

How do beds count toward my guest count?
Beds made for two, like a queen or a sofa bed, count as two. A twin counts as one. A crib counts as none.
Why does a crib not add to my guest count?
A crib is listed so parents can see it is there, but an infant does not take a guest spot. Your listing still needs at least one bed that sleeps someone.
Can I set a guest count different from what my beds sleep?
Yes. It is suggested from your beds, and you can change it. Lowering it is common. Setting it higher is allowed, but guests will notice the gap.
Where do I list a sofa bed in the living room?
In the optional common-area section of the rooms and beds screen.
Why can I not publish yet?
Every bedroom needs at least one bed, and at least one bed has to sleep someone. A bedroom left empty, or a crib on its own, will hold your listing back.
